Opportunity and Inequality

My Role

With my host family
United Planet placed me in the village of Putubiw in the Central Region of Ghana. In Putubiw, I lived with a host family. The family was wonderful at helping me adapt, making me feel welcome, and looking after all my needs. I had my own room, plenty of privacy, and all the basic comforts and amenities that I needed.

During my time in Putubiw, I worked at the Putubiw Junior Secondary School. I taught English and ICT (Information, Communication, and Technology) classes. I was responsible for preparing lesson plans for each day that I taught, and grading any exercieses or homework assignments. Each day I arrived at school around 8am and stayed until 1pm when I would go back home for lunch.

In addition to my work at the school, I worked with the Putubiw Students Union to write various proposals to be submitted to United Planet for funding. I worked with PUSU’s President, Ben, and the United Planet Country Coordinator to write these grant proposals. We wrote proposals for internet access for the village, for computers for the school, for a car for PUSU, and for a library building and library books.

In my spare time, I relaxed with my host brothers at home. I had plenty of time to read each day, play scrabble with my host brother, and watch TV with the family every night. I learned some Fantse, the language spoken in Putubiw, from my family and students. Occasionally, I traveled to Cape Coast, which was a relatively short car ride away. Additionally, I spent a lot of time walking around the village in the afternoons. I found that this was the best way to get to know the villagers, learn Fantse, and soak up some Ghanaian culture. On the weekends, I usually traveled to other parts of Ghana.
