Opportunity and Inequality

Welcome!

This website is my attempt to process and understand the harsh inequalities and injustices that my limited experiences with service and travel have exposed me to.
I have chosen the title "Opportunity and Inequality" because I want to explore why there is a dramatic inequality in the quality and quantity of opportunities available to individuals around the world today.

In attempting to make sense of inequality and its causes, I use the frameworks of social and cultural capital, structural violence, and cultural difference. This website is meant to be an educational tool and an exercise in thoughtfulness. It is a way for me to share my experiences with others. It is part of my ongoing attempt to process the beauties of cultural difference  and the challenges of witnessing profound inequalities.

As questions of inequality are universal, I draw on national and international experiences, specifically in New Orleans and in Ghana, to explore questions of inequality, opportunity, and cultural difference.
I do not intend to speak for anyone, but rather to explore my own limited understanding of injustice. It is only through understanding and awareness that we can work towards a more equitable and just global community.

Finally, this website is dedicated to many -

To all those struggling with the cruel realities of inequality,in the United States, in West Africa, and around the world;

To my family and to all the residents of New Orleans;

And to all those who made me feel welcome in Ghana. I hope to return the favor someday.
